On our drive from Kinsale to Waterford, we passed along a 25km stretch of road in an area known as the Copper Coast.
Known officially as the “Copper Coast UNESCO Global Geopark,” the Copper Coast is a collection of scenic overlooks, ruins of former copper mines, geological formations and other points of interest that form a cohesive unit. To me, it is one of those places that, after just a taste, make me think “wow, I could come back here and spend days!” I didn’t have much of an urge to drive in Ireland, but this was one of those places where I would be tempted to rent a car and come back to. ‘Wrong’ side of the road be danged! 🙂
What is a Global Geopark? I had never previously heard of such a thing. According to the park website:
“A single, unified geographical areas where sites and landscapes of international geological significance are managed with a holistic concept of protection, education and sustainable development.
A UNESCO Global Geopark uses its geological heritage, in connection with all other aspects of the area’s natural and cultural heritage, to enhance awareness and understanding of key issues facing society in the context of the dynamic planet we all live on, mitigating the effects of climate change and reducing the impact of natural disasters.”
We were able to stop briefly at several the sites along the route. The day was beautiful, the light gorgeous and there were plenty of things to point a camera at! Stunning seascapes have always been a thing, but the ruins of an old copper mine, ancient stone walls and amazing scenery left me wishing for more.
