Kilkenny is a lovely little town on the banks of the River Noor in County Kilkenny, Ireland. Like many of the towns we visited, Kilkenny is a place where we spent only one night, but would happily come back and stay a week. We barely had time to scratch the surface, although we did manage to make good use of the time we were given.

We visited the former Smithwick’s (SMITticks)Brewery, which is now more of an audio-video museum, as the actual brewing is now done at the Guinness brewery in Dublin. We also got good taste of traditional Irish music in the pub at the Hibernian Hotel.

Our guide had alerted me to the possibility of nice views of the Kilkenny Castle in the morning, and I set my alarm for a relatively late 6:00am, not expecting to see the sunrise (which was 5:25am!) but hoping for some nice morning light on the castle with calm water in the river. I was not disappointed!
