Behind The Scenes

Cleaning is an endless process at Biltmore House, Asheville NC

It takes a lot to maintain a 175,000 square foot mansion in the North Carolina mountains. And one of the benefits of an early house tour is we often see people finishing up the previous night’s cleaning chores. On our most recent visit we also saw some of the crews in the process of removing Christmas decorations. This provided some photo opportunities beyond just the usual photos of grand rooms, priceless artifacts and historically significant furnishings.

We have visited previously in late fall or early winter, when the decorations were being installed, but this is the first time we’ve had a glimpse, albeit fleeting, of the mansion in its full holiday splendor. The only thing we haven’t done yet is the evening candlelight visit, but that’s because it interferes with dinner at one of the fine restaurants on the estate! Plus it is pricey and ultimately not a lot different from a daytime visit.

I’ve posted a gallery of photos from our visit on my Adobe Portfolio page, and will try to get one more post of photos from Biltmore before we head off on our winter escape.

When I first started reading this post, I thought.. “wow, Tom and Kathy never mentioned that they had a house that was that big! I hope they have some help cleaning that” 😂

Somewhere in my archive, I have video of people carefully vacuuming ancient Roman and Greek statuary in the Vatican Museum. I remember being just knocked out by that, but thinking, “of course they have to clean it from time to time”

Nice set of images! Reminds me that I should probably take down our Christmas tree… so… thanks. I think.

Well, I’d never get Kathy to live there, because among other problems the bowling alley only has two lanes and the indoor pool no longer holds water. And the dining room is a little small – the table only holds 24 people. If we could just take the library, add a bathroom and a kitchen, we could make that work! It’s our favorite room in the place. 😉
