Today Kathy and I arrived at the ship for our river cruise, and along the way visited Zaanse Schans (ZAHNsah shawns), a neighborhood of Zaandam, Netherlands. Windmills and other buildings were relocated here to recreate the look of an 18th-19th century Dutch village. The place was beautiful but quite busy, as Amsterdam is celebrating its 750th Anniversary today. We were quite happy to be away from the city today, and onto a relatively quiet ship!

That would be something I’d like to see in Amsterdam. I would also like to see how they have the city setup for bicycle traffic rather than cars.

Bicycles are the primary form of transportation in Amsterdam, and in fact throughout the Netherlands. In the cities there are dedicated lanes with their own traffic signals. Bikes have right of way over pedestrians and there are bikes of all kinds. Many deliveries are made using cargo bikes and it is not unusual to see a man in a suit or woman in a dress (and heels!) riding to and from work.

Beautiful shots, Tom! Amsterdam truly has a unique charm, and your perspective captures it so well. Makes me want to revisit some of the quieter corners of the city.

Thank you very much! We did love Amsterdam and I’ll be posting more photos soon.
